Professional background and education
Dr. Hans-Rudolf Weiss is a distinguished figure in the fields of orthopedics, physical and rehabilitative medicine, and integrative therapies. His medical journey began with a state exam in physiotherapy in 1979, laying the foundation for a lifelong commitment to improving patient care. In 1992, he became a specialist in orthopedics, and by 1996, he further expanded his expertise as a specialist in physical and rehabilitative medicine. Recognizing the value of a holistic approach, he also pursued chiropractic training and extensive education in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which includes acupuncture, herbal medicine, dietetics, and Qi Gong.
Innovation in bracing technology
Unsatisfied with standard brace options, Hans-Rudolf Weiss became a trailblazer in brace design. He invented and developed the Chêneau light™ construction kit, and later, as a self-taught CAD specialist, he created the Gensingen Brace™. These inventions have set new standards in the treatment of spinal deformities, offering more effective and patient-friendly solutions.
From 1992 to 2008, Hans-Rudolf Weiss served as the medical director of the Katharina Schroth Clinic (later Asklepios Katharina Schroth Clinic) in Bad Sobernheim, Germany, overseeing care for more than 3,000 patients annually. Following this, he ran his own practice in Gensingen, Germany, where he continued his pioneering work and developed the Gensingen Brace™ with the aid of digital x-ray technology (2009–2019). His vast clinical experience with spinal deformities is unparalleled.
Contributions and Patents
Beyond the Chêneau light™ and Gensingen Brace™, Hans-Rudolf Weiss introduced the kyphologic™ brace for kyphosis—now widely emulated—and developed and patented the physio-logic™ brace for lumbar kyphosis and chronic pain. He also created a new classification for chronic non-specific low back pain, along with clinical tests and the spondylogic™ brace for chronic instability low back pain.
In the realm of technology, Hans-Rudolf Weiss has advanced 3D-printed braces, making them lighter and more comfortable for patients. His latest development, the Gensingen Brace Evolution 2.0™, represents a new generation of patient-centered bracing and is currently patent pending [1] .
In addition to developing an advanced physiotherapy program for scoliosis patients, the Schroth Best Practice Program, which began in 2004, he introduced his own school of manual therapy, Weiss’s Easy Manual Therapy (MT)™, in 2024.
Integrative and Scientific Contributions
A recognized specialist in TCM, Hans-Rudolf Weiss published a study on acupuncture for scoliosis in 2008 and authored a book on Qi Gong exercises and music in 2000 [2] . He has treated numerous patients with acupuncture, herbal medicine, and Qi Gong, integrating these methods with Western medicine to deliver comprehensive care.
Responding to new scientific findings linking spinal cord tethering to idiopathic scoliosis, he developed a Qi Gong-based physiotherapy concept and a unique shock wave therapy (ECSWT). Hans-Rudolf Weiss has conducted scientific evaluations for these innovative approaches and continues to advance the field [3] .
He also made a new discovery in differential diagnosis of scoliosis: the hemidystrophic thorax, which can mimic scoliosis [4] .
